Be Your Own Floral Designer! Tips on Arranging Flowers:
First the accent flowers, then the focus flowers, then the filler flowers, then the greens - make your flowers look their best.
Flowerfarm.com has expert, artistic designers who include the right mixture of blooms to give you a unique opportunity to use your personal creative juices.
Below you will find a few tips that will help you arrange your flowers. For those of you in one of our Flowers Everyday Programs, your Flowerfarm.com "Blooming Bunch" package will arrive with a variety of flowers that make it possible for you to create imaginative bouquets and arrangements.
-
Fill a clean vase or container with water at room temperature. You should also add the contents of one package of floral preservative to the water and stir well.
- Carefully, remove all foliage (leaves) that will fall below the water line.
- Will your flower design be viewed from various directions? If so, be sure to turn your vase or container as you place the flowers in the vase, to obtain an even balance.
- Generally, when you start arranging a bouquet, you should first position the bunch of "accent" flowers from your package. Accent flowers add color or volume to your design, but are not necessarily the focus of the arrangement.
- Cut all stems to be 1 to 1-1/2 times the height of your vase or container. This will help to stabilize the arrangement. "Criss-cross" the stems — that is, place them inside the vase or container at an angle. This technique will make the stems appear to be different lengths; more important, artistically, it establishes the width of your design.
- Select the bunch or bunches of "focal" flowers from your package. Focal flowers catch the eye due to their size, color, and/or placement within the design. Cut the stems at different lengths and disperse them throughout the accent flowers. The various lengths of the focal flowers will add depth to your design.
- Select the bunch of "filler" flowers from your package. Filler flowers are usually smaller in size and have a lighter appearance. Cut the stems to a length that will fill the empty spots or holes in your design.
- Finally, select the bunch of "greens" from your package. Greens are the foliage that helps to "finish" the design. Frame your bouquet by placing the greens around the rim of your vase or container. Don't let the greens overpower your design.
- Keep your floral creation away from direct sunlight or direct heat. Check the water level daily and refill when necessary.
- After three days, re-cut the stems and replace the water in each vase.
Enjoy your flowers and have a wonderful day!

Even More Flower Care Tricks, Tips and Advice
Get Them Ready to Show — Pull off all stem leaves
that will be submerged by vase water. In a water-filled basin or bowl submerge flower stems,
and cut them diagonally with scissors. This simple step will help your flowers absorb cut
flower food, while eliminating stem-clogging bacteria.
Feed Your Flowers — Always start with a clean
vase and add a packet of cut flower food to warm water. A packet of flower food is enclosed
with all flowers and arrangements from Proflowers. The use of flower food has been shown to
increase the life of fresh flowers by several days. Individual packets are available wherever
cut flowers are sold.
Showing Your Flowers Off — Display your flowers
in a cool, draft-free location, away from harsh sunlight and heat vents. Don't set flowers on
top of a TV. Top off water daily and replace totally after several days. Flowers like to be
spray misted too! When you're down to your last few blooms, change to a smaller vase.
Tips for Getting Started — Beautiful bouquets and
flower arrangements can be shown off in many different types of vases and containers. The
possibilities are endless—from an antique teapot or brass urn, to an elegant crystal vase, or a
simple glass jar. Avoid containers made of steel or iron.
- Tip: Make sure your vase is leak proof, and has a neck and water
reservoir large enough for your flowers to fit comfortably. For some flower arrangements you may
also want to use a brick of floral foam—a substance that, when saturated, holds flowers in place.
- Tip: Be sure to soak your foam in water containing a floral food
solution.Let foam absorb water at its own rate. Cut it to fit the shape of your container, leaving
enough space for reserve water. Floral foam cuts easier when wet.
If your flowers sometimes don't stand up straight ...
- Tip: It could be your vase is too short for your flowers, or your
flowers are too tall for your vase! A good rule of thumb: the height of your vase should be about
half to one-third as tall as your flowers.
- Tip: Build a grid across the top of your vase with clear tape. Then
place flowers within the grid.
Yikes! I've cut my flowers too short!
- Tip: Don't worry. Just add pebbles or marbles to the bottom of your vase
or simply float the head of a broken flower in a clear bowl for a charming display.
Splish, splash, my furniture is taking a bath!
- Tip: To avoid "spill over" when watering your flowers, use a kitchen
bulb-type baster to reach into narrow vases and full arrangements.
